We all know at least one person who we admire and want to be more like. Perhaps that person is incredibly witty and can make people laugh effortlessly. Maybe that person is creative, has a great sense of style, or seems to breeze through life. Whatever those qualities are in that person that you admire, you find yourself aspiring to adopt those traits and to make them a part of you. After all, they say that imitation is the highest form of flattery.
So what is wrong with that? Nothing...so long as you are still you.
We only see glimpses of other people's lives. The highlights on Instagram and Facebook or the few hours we see them each week. It is difficult to really get to know another person, and what we see are their behaviors and choices. Those are the pieces from which we form our impression of the person and decide what we like and do not like based on what we are exposed to at a certain time.
You are who you are as a result of your experiences and the life you have led up to this point. Your likes, your dislikes, your sense of humor, and your abilities are all shaped by the company you keep, the shows you watch, the music you listen to and the activities you chose to occupy your time. Recognize that the things that you choose to build your world will continue to reinforce your likes and continually shape you into the person that you are. Everything around us is digested into our bodies, thoughts, and even our emotions.
You are unique and everything that you are is based on your individual lifetime of decisions and actions, right and wrong. As impossible or unfair as it might seem, you are exactly where you need to be right now.
Your journey does not end at this one point in time but rather it goes on. Where you will be once you work through this will be a very different point. You arrived here, not by accident but through your journey which is unique to you. This moment right now is
where you are supposed to be. Whether you are facing challenges or feel stuck, you will continue to grow as a result of dealing with your personal situation. This is just one step along your journey and is is shaping you along the way.
Rather than trying to be like someone else and copying their decisions, spend some time getting to know you and what you need to do in order to better take care of you because you are worth it!
